1. What is Steven Ministry?

Stephen Ministry is a program in which trained lay people provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care to individuals in our congregation and community who are experiencing major difficult transitions in their lives.

Stephen Ministers spend an hour a week listening non-judgmentally to their Care Receivers, providing care, support, encouragement and prayer.

Stephen Ministers do not provide services such as transportation, food delivery, household care, etc. Stephen Ministry requires that they feel called to this specialized ministry, pass an interview, complete 50 hours of training in emotional and spiritual care, be commissioned, and attend bi-monthly meetings for continuing education and peer group supervision.

Stephen Ministry is completely confidential. The identity of those receiving care and what takes place in each caring relationship remains private.

2. Who Might Need a Stephen Minister?

Stephen Ministry is for those who are facing difficult life situations.  These might include:
Birth, adoption, miscarriage or infertility   Chronic illness Birth of a special needs child
Physical disability   Hospitalization   Unwanted pregnancy
Parenting struggles   Aging Trouble with the law
Job loss or job crisis Life-threatening illness Relocation
Divorce or separation  Mild to moderate depression   Empty nest
Natural disaster Death of a loved one   Recovery after accident or disaster
 End of Pregnancy  Caregiver’s burnout

3. How Do I get a Stephen Minister?

Potential Care Receivers should talk with Gen, our Stephen Leader who serves as Referrals Coordinator, at 680-6923.

If Gen is unavailable, you may call any of the Stephen Leaders listed below.

They will talk with you about your situation and needs, and explain how the ministry works.

You may also talk with Pastor Peg or Pastor Reg through the church office at 895-3754.

They will help you connect with Gen or another Stephen Leader.

4. What If My Friend Needs a Stephen Minister

The person who is interested in having a Stephen Minister must talk with a Stephen Leader or the pastors directly, or give a friend permission to talk with a Stephen Leader on their behalf.

We never contact a potential Care Receiver “cold” or based on someone else’s recommendation without permission from the possible care receiver.

5. Who Runs the Stephen Ministry Program?

The program is administered by Stephen Leaders who are Christians called to this kind of leadership. Like Stephen Ministers, the Leaders must feel called, must complete an interview and a weeklong intensive training, and must be commissioned.

Unlike Stephen Ministers, the Leaders do not have Care Receivers. Please feel welcome to call any of the Leaders to learn more about our Stephen Ministry program, or how to become a Stephen Minister yourself!

6. How Did Stephen Ministry Get Started?

The program at Faith Lutheran is one among Steven Ministry programs in 9,000 churches in 100 Christian denominations in 22 countries.

There are about 450,000 Stephen Ministers and 50,000 Stephen Leaders who have served about a million care receivers since Stephen Ministry was founded in 1975.

Stephen Ministry programs can be found in all fifty states, nine Canadian provinces, and 21 other countries.

It is now a not-for-profit Christian educational organization based in St. Louis, Missouri. Call 314-428-2600 or click here to log on to their website:  www.stephenministries.org  (A new window will open.)
