In a nutritional survey of northern California
Residents aged 60 or older:
• 43% live alone
• 38% have annual income of less than
$15,000/year
• 60% use a food assistance program.
The Senior Health Improvement Program
(SHIP) asks you to think about whether or not
you know anyone who may fit into one or
more of the categories above.
Do you know
of a senior who is going hungry?
Perhaps
forced to choose between buying groceries or
seeing to other needs? Is this person isolated?
It is important to note that nutritional deficiencies
are not a normal part of the aging process,
but are rather the consequence of an
unmet need.
The SHIP program has received
a grant to provide emergency food to
Butte County Seniors. |
The requirements for a senior to access this
service are as follows:
• Must be 65 or older
• Must be a resident of Butte County
• Must be low income and in need of
emergency food
Low income status is based on the honor
system.
SHIP has options available to help
meet the need for nutritional sustenance.
Save-Mart & Food Maxx grocery store vouchers,
Community Action Agency meals at senior
nutrition sites or home delivered meals
and Meals on Wheels are part of the food
options available.
All qualified senior will
receive a home visit from a SHIP PHN.
|
During
this time a comprehensive needs ssessment
will be completed and the appropriate
food option will be instituted as well as referrals
to other needed service providers. |
