The Taizé (tay-ZAY´) prayer form is both personal and ecumenical, a format that crosses cultural
and denominational lines.
The prayer form
dates from 1940 when Roger Louis Schutz-Marsauche, a 25 year-old Lutheran later known as Brother Roger, came to the small village of Taizé
in the Burgundy region of France, dreaming of starting an ecumenical community
for contemplation and reconciliation of Christians of all faiths.
In the Taizé
service, there is some scripture reading, much simple singing of chants, and
time for meditation. Candles are used to help us focus our thoughts.
